Rye flour brand withdrawn for the presence of a hallucinogenic fungus

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan) has ordered the withdrawal of a batch of Biogrà brand whole-grain rye flour, Harina de centeno integral, in 500-gram plastic containers with batch number 21-005 and a best-before date of May 30. 2023 after detecting the presence of ergot alkaloids, a hallucinogenic fungus, in the product.

The presence of the suspect substance was identified first in a batch tested in Catalonia, and was added to the Coordinated System for Rapid Information Exchange (Sciri) system, after the ergot alkaloid was discovered.

Its consumption can cause symptoms compatible with ergotism in people (hallucinations, convulsions, numbness, tingling, pain, cyanosis, absence of pulse and intense and sudden cold in the extremities that can be followed by acute burning, abdominal pain), therefore that the health authorities recommend going to a health centre in case of adverse effects. They do of course recommend not consuming the product in the first place and returning it to the point of purchase for a refund.

The initial distribution of the product has occurred in the Valencian Community, Castilla-La Mancha, the Balearic Islands, Galicia, Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Castilla y León, the Community of Madrid, La Rioja, the Basque Country and Catalonia, although it cannot be ruled out that there may be redistributions to other autonomous communities.
