Electric vehicle sales shoot up 70% in March

Sales of electrified vehicles in Spain (electric and plug-in hybrids, including passenger cars, quadricycles, commercial and industrial vehicles, and buses) achieved a notable increase of 70.4% in March, with a total of 11,690 units.

Although it improves the results of the previous year, the sales volume still only represents 10% of the total market. A figure that, despite the strong increase in the general market of close to 115,000 units, remains at a share well below the European average.

As for the registrations of zero and low emission vehicles (electrified, hybrid and gas), they increased by 73.1% in the month, with 42,815 units sold.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES – Zero Label

Sales of pure electric vehicles increased 63.1% in March, with 5,684 units registered. It represents 4.83% of the market share in the month. In the year as a whole, sales of these vehicles totalled 13,878 units, 62.7% more than in the same period of the previous year. The cumulative share of the year is 4.95%

PLUG-IN HYBRID VEHICLES – Zero Label

Sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles grew by 78% during March and reached 6,006 registered units this month. It represents 5.17% of the market share for the month. In the year as a whole, sales of these vehicles totalled 14,953 units, 41.5% more than in the same period of the previous year. The cumulative quota for the year is 5.33%.

HYBRID VEHICLES – ECO Label

Sales of non-plug-in hybrid vehicles increased by 74.3% during March, reaching 29,199 registered units this month. It represents 25.11% of the market share in March. In the accumulated year, sales of these vehicles accumulated 73,143 units, 53.8% more than in the same period of the previous year. The share of the total for the year is 26.08%.

GAS VEHICLES – ECO Label

Sales of gas vehicles grew 71.8% in March with 1,919 registered units representing 1.65% of the market share in the month. In the year as a whole, sales of these vehicles accumulated 5,803 units, 70.7% more than in the same period of the previous year. The cumulative quota for the year is 2.07%.

HYDROGEN VEHICLES – Zero Label

Sales of hydrogen cell vehicles registered 7 new registrations in the month of March, accumulating a total of 8 units sold during this 2023.

Despite the increase that electrified passenger cars register for another month, both the volume and the rate of sales continue to be well below the necessary objectives. To achieve the commitments made to reduce emissions, this year the electrified market should reach 190,000 units sold, but if the current rate is maintained, the national market would be slightly above 100,000 registrations.
