Covid Infections and Deaths Both Increased in March

According to the latest update on the evolution of COVID-19, with data reported as of March 29, the incidence (AI) of cases diagnosed in ≥ 60 years of age in the last 14 days stands at 68.99.

For its part, the total number of deceased amounts to 120,426 (53 with a date of death in the last 7 days).

Hospital occupancy stands at 1.64% and that of ICU beds at 1.16%.

For its part, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended authorizing the Bimervax COVID-19 vaccine (developed by the Spanish company HIPRA) as a booster dose for people over 16 years of age who have previously been administered a COVID-19 mRNA.

As we come to the end of both the month and the quarter, we can see the evolution over both those periods.

In March, there were a total of 35,411 new Covid infections recorded amongst the small group of people being tested, an increase compared to the 31,858 of February. In January, there were 47,220 new infections recorded.

Regarding deaths, there were 1,046 people who died from Covid in March, an increase again compared to the 946 deaths recorded in February, but lower than the 1,339 deaths from Covid recorded in January.

For the first quarter of the year, 114,489 new Covid cases have been recorded, lower than the last quarter of 2022, when 253,160 new cases were confirmed.

Regarding deaths, the first quarter of 2023 has seen 3,331 people die from Covid, considerably higher than the last quarter of 2022, when the death toll was 2,833.
