Nearly 250 doctors are being offered active retirement in the Valencian Community. This means that although they have reached the retirement age of 66 years, as they are under 70 years-old they can continue working. The invitation allows these doctors to continue working or return to work, full-time or part-time, while simultaneously receiving 75 percent of their pension.

A modification of the General Social Security Law approved on 28th December allows the staff of Family Medicine and Primary Care Paediatrics, who meet certain criteria, to voluntarily be able to merge their remuneration with a part of their retirement pension.

So far the Ministry of Health has received 33 requests for an active extension, and 2 for reinstatement after retirement. Another 31 professionals who are going to retire this year could also apply for active retirement. The measure encourages a prolonged working life for medical professionals in response to the needs of the National Health System.
