According to the latest official balance, offered by the Health Alerts and Emergencies Coordination Centre (consolidated data as of January 13), 13,711,251 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported so far and 117,759 the total number of deaths.
The infections have almost doubled in the week, with an additional 17,773 reported since the last update, whereas last week, the figure was an additional 9,220. It should be noted that last week the figures were released a day earlier than normal, due to a national holiday. This week’s increase is still higher than the week before, when an additional 14,221 Covid infections were recorded. It is also worth noting that only a small portion of the population are tested.
Regarding deaths, there was an increase of 346 deaths this week. Last week, published early, the increase was 318, and 196 the week before that. This is the highest weekly increase in deaths from Covid since 11 September 2022, when the weekly increase was 446 deaths.
As regards the evolution of infections in China, the Ministry of Health, after the meeting of the Alert Report and the Public Health Commission and in line with the measures announced by other countries such as Italy, the USA and France, has reported the implementation of controls on travellers from China at Spanish airports. Among them, the presentation of a test against COVID-19 with a negative result or the complete vaccination schedule will be required, with vaccines authorised by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Likewise, in coordination with AENA, work is being done to carry out COVID-19 tests on travellers arriving from this country.
